Black Forest Labs releases the FLUX.1 image model family

Black Forest Labs introduced FLUX.1 with a hosted pro model, downloadable dev weights for noncommercial use and an Apache-2.0 schnell variant. The release gave developers several ways to run image generation, with different licensing terms.

Three variants at release

Black Forest Labs released FLUX.1 as its first model family on August 1, 2024. The models used a flow-matching architecture combining multimodal and parallel diffusion transformer blocks. The announcement described all three public variants as having 12 billion parameters. [1]

Pro used hosted access; dev supplied guidance-distilled weights for noncommercial applications; schnell supplied weights under Apache 2.0. That spread made local experimentation and hosted product development available through different paths. The company's quality comparisons were its own evaluations, rather than a guarantee for every prompt. [1]
