Image models with several distribution paths
Black Forest Labs develops generative image models and makes them available to application developers as well as people running their own inference systems. Its FLUX.1 release on August 1, 2024 put three related models into different distribution channels: pro through hosted services, dev as downloadable weights, and schnell under Apache 2.0. [1]
Those differences affect what a developer can build and where it can run. The original announcement described dev as a noncommercial model; it did not give the whole family schnell's Apache license. The current dev license also separates permissions to use the model from permissions concerning generated outputs. [1][3]
An image-generation component others can adapt
The company later released FLUX.1 Krea dev with Krea, a model trained toward a particular photographic aesthetic. This was a joint model-development contribution, rather than simply placing another provider's model in a product catalogue. [2]
Downloadable weights let researchers and developers inspect deployment choices and adapt an image-generation component. They do not, on their own, establish unrestricted production use: the current dev terms limit model use and derivatives, with separate commercial licensing. The applicable model's terms remain part of its access story. [3]
