A share placing and a bond, about $5 billion together
Z.ai, the Zhipu AI company listed in Hong Kong since January, announced on September 13, 2026 that it had agreed to place up to 21,965,000 new H shares at HK$714 each, about 10 percent below the previous close, for gross proceeds of about HK$15.7 billion. Alongside it, it agreed to issue RMB20.14 billion of zero-coupon convertible bonds due September 2027, settled in U.S. dollars, for gross proceeds of about US$3.02 billion. China International Capital Corporation and Guotai Junan Securities acted as placing agents. [1]
It was the company's second placing in two months: a July placing at HK$1,588 a share had raised about HK$31.4 billion net, so the new price was less than half the July one. Caixin put the two September deals together at about $5 billion. The placing completed on September 16 and the bonds on September 18. [1][4][2]
Money for models that build their successors' training environments
Z.ai said about 60 percent of the net proceeds would go to research and development of its next-generation GLM foundation models and its Fully Self Training system, plus the training, inference and computing infrastructure behind them, with the rest split between expansion and acquisitions (15 percent) and working capital (25 percent). The filing defines Fully Self Training as next-generation GLM models trained in environments built by the previous generation, which it calls a closed loop of recursive self-improvement across data, environments and infrastructure. [1]
Atlas interpretation: A securities filing is an unusual place to state a research goal in those terms. The 60 percent line bundles the self-training research with ordinary compute spending, so the filing does not say how much goes to the loop itself, and the models it describes build their successors' training environments rather than training their successors directly.
