Zhipu AI (Z.ai): GLM Models, Hong Kong Listing and Funding

Zhipu AI, a 2019 Tsinghua spinout branded internationally as Z.ai, listed in Hong Kong, released GLM-5 open-weight models and raised about $5 billion in September 2026.

A Tsinghua lab that went public

Zhipu AI was founded in Beijing in 2019 as a spinout of Tsinghua University's Knowledge Engineering Group, led by professors Jie Tang and Juanzi Li. Zhang Peng is chief executive. The company rebranded internationally as Z.ai in mid-2025, and on January 8, 2026 it listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange under ticker 2513, the first of China's so-called AI tiger startups to go public. [1][2]

By August 2026 its market capitalization had reached roughly $62 billion, making it the most valuable publicly traded AI-only company in China and, by one industry estimate that predates the listing, the country's third-largest player in the market for business-facing large language models. [2]

GLM models push the open-weights frontier

Zhipu's GLM line runs back to GLM-10B in 2021 and the bilingual GLM-130B in 2022, well before the current wave of open-weight releases out of Chinese labs. By June 2026 the GLM-5 series had taken the top spot on an independent open-weights benchmark, and by one security vendor's own testing it had moved ahead of Anthropic's Claude models on cyber tasks. [1][4][5]

Licensing tightened as the models got more capable. GLM-5.1 in April 2026 and the smaller GLM-5.3-Flash both shipped under a plain MIT license, but when the GLM-5.3 flagship's weights followed two weeks after its API debut, the license required large commercial operators to clear a Z.ai security review first: downloadable, but not unconditionally so. [3][8][9]

Post-training as the new lever

GLM-5.3 in August 2026 kept the same 743 billion parameter base as its predecessor and found its gains entirely in post-training, reporting the lab's strongest coding results to date and 84.5 percent on the CyberGym security benchmark, ahead of Anthropic's Mythos 5 and OpenAI's GPT-5.6 Sol by Zhipu's own account. [6][7]

The model that became GLM-5.3-Flash had already been running for a week under a different name, "Ox Alpha," before Z.ai confirmed it had built the thing, a stealth launch ahead of the formal release. [8]
