Google Closes $32B Wiz Acquisition: Approvals and Product Plan

Google completed its $32 billion Wiz acquisition after US and EU review. See the eleven-month timeline and plans to keep Wiz multicloud and independently branded.

Nearly a year from signature to close

Google agreed to buy Wiz for $32 billion on March 18, 2025. The deal closed on March 11, 2026, almost twelve months later, with Google's own announcement giving no dollar figure and instead describing Wiz joining Google Cloud. [1]

TechCrunch's report of the closing says the acquisition cleared U.S. antitrust review in November 2025 and EU antitrust review in February 2026, after both jurisdictions opened probes into the deal. [2]

Atlas interpretation: An all cash acquisition of this size, a cloud security company that plugs into every major public cloud, was always going to draw antitrust scrutiny on both sides of the Atlantic. The eleven month gap between signing and closing is that scrutiny playing out, not a sign the deal was in doubt at any point after March 2025. [2]

Wiz keeps its name, its rivals' clouds, and its chief executive

Google's announcement says Wiz will keep operating as an independent brand and will continue to protect workloads on AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Oracle Cloud in addition to Google Cloud, and that it will still be sold through partner security offerings. Wiz co-founder and CEO Assaf Rappaport continues in that role, reporting into Google Cloud, which is run by Thomas Kurian. [1]

Sundar Pichai's statement frames the deal around Google's own security mission, and Kurian's describes it as making a unified platform out of what Google Cloud sells and what Wiz already scans, both pitched at protecting customers who run workloads across more than one cloud provider. [1]

Atlas interpretation: Keeping Wiz sold on rival clouds is the part of this that is not automatic for an acquirer. Google's cloud business is a distant third to AWS and Azure, and a Wiz that only protected Google Cloud workloads would have been a much smaller prize. Leaving Wiz multicloud is what makes the largest cybersecurity acquisition on record pay for Google's own competitive position rather than shrink Wiz's addressable market down to it. [1]

The biggest check Alphabet has written, and it is not for a model

TechCrunch notes that Wiz had crossed $1 billion in annualized recurring revenue during 2025 and that Rappaport had turned down an earlier Google offer of roughly $23 billion in mid 2024, on the view that Wiz could grow into a larger price on its own. [2]

Atlas interpretation: At $32 billion this is the largest acquisition in Alphabet's history, ahead of anything Google has spent on a model lab, a chip effort, or a compute deal. That the record check went to a cloud security scanner rather than a frontier AI asset says something about where Google judged its actual exposure to be: not a shortage of models, but customers who will not move workloads to any cloud, including its own, without a credible answer on security across all of them.
