Three billion euros, at more than 21 billion after the money
Mistral AI raised EUR3 billion in a Series D at a post-money valuation above EUR21 billion. Samsung Electronics led the round, with the Scaleup Europe Fund managed by EQT and existing investor PSG Equity as co-leads. Mistral called it the largest equity fundraising ever completed by a European technology company; Reuters described that record as the company's claim rather than an independently audited ranking. [1][4]
The valuation was nearly twice the EUR11.7 billion attached to Mistral's EUR1.7 billion Series C one year earlier. The new round alone also exceeded the roughly EUR2.7 billion Le Monde reported the company had raised across its entire first three years. Those comparisons describe how quickly investors repriced the company; a post-money valuation is not cash available to spend. [4][5]
The chip supply chain moved onto the cap table
ASML, which led the Series C, returned as an investor. Samsung, another company central to advanced-chip production, led this round and took what it described the next day as a strategic equity stake. Samsung and Mistral also announced planned work on on-premises AI across Samsung's semiconductor operations, where sensitive design and manufacturing data would stay inside Samsung's infrastructure. [1][6]
Two consecutive lead investors drawn from semiconductor manufacturing give Mistral more than generic venture backing: they connect the model maker to companies that understand the equipment, memory, and fabrication constraints beneath AI systems. The Samsung release describes a collaboration to be developed and implemented. It does not show that Mistral had already changed Samsung's chip operations when the financing closed. [1][6]
Sovereign means control over deployment, not a French-only investor list
Mistral says the money will expand frontier research, training compute, infrastructure, commercial operations, and its international footprint. Its definition of a sovereign AI stack has four parts: data kept within the customer's boundaries, models that can be controlled and customized, private and predictable compute, and production systems that can be audited. Reuters reported that more than 125 customers could download and customize Mistral models on their own servers, while the company projected annual recurring revenue above $1 billion by year-end. [1][4]
That strategy grows out of the open-weight identity established with Mistral 7B, but now extends from downloadable models into infrastructure and hands-on enterprise delivery. The cap table remains international, with Samsung, Nvidia, Salesforce Ventures, BlackRock-managed funds, and other non-European investors involved. Sovereignty here is a claim about a customer's technical control and choice of region, not a claim that every provider or shareholder is European. The revenue figure remains management guidance, not a completed 2026 result. [1][4][9]
Owning the compute is still a buildout
Arthur Mensch told CNBC, as quoted by IT Pro, that Mistral's long-term plan is to rely fully on capacity it is building and to grow the compute it owns by around 100 percent over five years. Data Center Dynamics describes a mixed starting point: Mistral leases space at Eclairion's site south of Paris, raised $830 million in debt to buy 13,800 Nvidia GB300 GPUs for it, announced a deployment at Digital Realty in Paris, and planned a EUR1.2 billion data center at EcoDataCenter's Borlange site. [7][8]
The Series D therefore finances a transition toward greater control of physical capacity, not completed independence from landlords, cloud partners, or chip suppliers. Mistral can own GPUs while leasing the building around them, and can offer European processing while still depending on Nvidia hardware and outside data center operators. The strategic bet is that more control at each layer will be valuable enough to enterprise and government buyers to justify carrying more of the infrastructure bill itself. [1][7][8]
