What the August 11 update actually said
OpenAI's running post on the program, updated on August 11, 2026, states: "ChatGPT Ads has now launched in the United Kingdom, Mexico, Brazil, Japan, and South Korea. We're continuing to expand to more markets this year." That confirmed a plan the same post had floated on May 7: "In the coming weeks, we plan to expand the ads pilot in ChatGPT" to those same five countries. [1]
The pilot had started six months earlier, on February 9, 2026, for logged-in adult users on ChatGPT's Free and Go tiers in the United States. Paid Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education tiers stay ad-free, and OpenAI's posted principles say ads are clearly labeled, separated from ChatGPT's answers, and do not influence what the model tells a user. [1]
The self-serve platform behind the expansion
The August 11 expansion ran on Ads Manager, the self-serve buying tool OpenAI opened in beta on May 5, 2026 at ads.openai.com. That launch dropped the roughly $50,000 minimum spend that had gated the original managed pilot with brands like Best Buy, Lowe's, Target, and Williams-Sonoma, and added CPC bidding alongside the CPM-only pricing the pilot had used. OpenAI's own advertiser page describes setup in three steps: create a campaign with a budget and objective, add ad details or build creative directly in Ads Manager, then monitor and adjust performance from the dashboard. [3][2]
OpenAI's advertiser page also cites an early advertiser, Newegg, saying it wanted to appear "when someone is researching what to buy," and offers new advertisers $500 in ad credit after they spend $500, a standard acquisition incentive for a self-serve ad platform still building a customer base. [2]
Atlas interpretation: The self-serve mechanism, minimum-spend removal, and CPC bidding had already existed for over three months by August 11. That date marks the international pilot, first promised in May, turning into a live five-country footprint on the same platform. It is a reasonable point to date the transition from pilot to standing product even though the buying tools arrived earlier. [1][3]
What the expansion turned into
By August 31, 2026, less than 200 days after the February pilot began, ChatGPT Ads had reached a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate, according to Pulse2. The same report says self-service purchasing had by then extended to India, Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa, putting direct Ads Manager access in more than 40 countries, with tens of thousands of advertisers and small and medium-sized businesses making up a material share of the revenue. [4]
Atlas interpretation: That trajectory, from a single-country test with a five-figure spend floor to a billion-dollar run rate across dozens of countries in under seven months, supports the interpretation that OpenAI settled on advertising alongside subscriptions as a real revenue line for its largest consumer product. Whether that mirrors the ad-supported internet that preceded it, rather than differing from it in ways that matter, is the more open question, and OpenAI's own posted principles on labeling and answer independence read as a direct response to that comparison.
