Ads in ChatGPT: 2026 U.S. Test, Targeting & Privacy

OpenAI tested labeled ads for logged-in U.S. adults on ChatGPT Free and Go. See what conversation context could shape ad selection and what advertisers did not receive.

The first test was narrower than advertising across ChatGPT

OpenAI began testing ads in the United States for logged-in adults using the Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts were excluded. The company said an ad would be labeled and visually separated from the answer, and that payment would not influence what ChatGPT said. [1]

Ads were also excluded for users OpenAI identified as under 18 and around sensitive or regulated topics. A user could dismiss an ad, report it, ask why it appeared and delete the data used for ad selection. These product rules define the test more precisely than saying ads were added to ChatGPT as a whole. [1]

The answer and the ad used different data boundaries

OpenAI said ad selection could use material submitted by the advertiser, the topic of the current conversation, previous chats and prior interactions with ads. That means the placement could be personalized even though the advertiser did not receive the conversation that produced it. [1]

Advertisers were to receive aggregate measures such as views and clicks, not chat contents, chat history, memories or personal details. This is a boundary on what leaves OpenAI for the advertiser; it does not mean OpenAI ignored conversation context when choosing the ad. [1]

Atlas interpretation: The useful distinction is between influence, selection and disclosure. The sponsor was not supposed to change the answer, conversation context could help select a placement, and the advertiser received aggregate results. Evaluating the system requires checking all three claims separately. [1]

Advertising became one access subsidy, not the only business model

Before the test, OpenAI framed advertising as a way to fund broader access while preserving paid, ad-free subscriptions. That placed ads beside subscription and business revenue, rather than replacing those products. [2]

The February test later expanded in stages. On August 11, OpenAI announced availability in the United Kingdom, Mexico, Brazil, Japan and South Korea. That later rollout expanded the product beyond the February test, but it should not be projected back onto February's U.S.-only scope. [1]
