Three jobs change in one announcement
Sundar Pichai announced the changes on August 5, 2026. Koray Kavukcuoglu became senior vice president of Google DeepMind, with direct responsibility for Gemini model development, frontier AI research, and the Gemini app and developer teams. He reports directly to Pichai. [1]
Demis Hassabis moved from chief executive of Google DeepMind into two new roles: chair of Google DeepMind and chief scientist of Alphabet. He keeps his position leading Isomorphic Labs, and Pichai described his focus going forward as AGI strategy and advising leadership across the company rather than day to day operations. [1][3]
Startuphub.ai reports Hassabis framed the move himself, saying he has been working toward AGI his whole life and now feels it is close at hand, and that Kavukcuoglu had already been handling much of the day to day model development work before the title changed. [3]
Jeff Dean leaves after 27 years
Jeff Dean, an early architect of Google's search infrastructure, TensorFlow, and Google Brain, left the company after 27 years. Pichai's post states that Dean and longtime collaborator Sanjay Ghemawat are launching an independent public benefit corporation to accelerate discoveries in machine learning, science, and engineering, with Google acting as a founding investor and cloud partner rather than an owner. [1]
Startuphub.ai names the new company Discovery Loop and reports two additional co-founders alongside Dean and Ghemawat: Oriol Vinyals and Quoc Le, both also longtime Google Brain and DeepMind researchers. It describes the venture's intended focus as AI-accelerated scientific research spanning machine learning automation, hardware design, drug discovery, and clean energy. [3]
Atlas interpretation: A public benefit corporation with Google as an investor and cloud partner, rather than a clean break, is a structure that keeps Dean's group inside Google's commercial orbit while giving it independence from Google DeepMind's product roadmap. Pairing that departure with a promotion for Kavukcuoglu and a step back for Hassabis in the same announcement reads as Google consolidating frontier model and product execution under one direct report to Pichai, while routing Dean's more exploratory research interests outside the company rather than inside a reorganized DeepMind. [1][3]
The market noticed
Startuphub.ai reports Alphabet's stock fell roughly 5 percent following the announcement, erasing an estimated $160 billion to $200 billion in market value. [3]
Atlas interpretation: That reaction is large for a leadership reshuffle that kept every named executive employed in some capacity at or adjacent to Google, and it suggests investors read Jeff Dean's exit, rather than the Hassabis and Kavukcuoglu title changes, as the news that mattered. Neither source available at review time reported an explanation from Alphabet for the size of the move, so the causal link between the announcement and the drop is the market's inference, not a confirmed one.
