Anthropic Series H: $65B Round at a $965B Valuation

Anthropic's May 2026 Series H named Altimeter, Dragoneer, Greenoaks and Sequoia as leads, surpassed OpenAI's valuation, and coincided with Claude Opus 4.8.

The round

Anthropic said it raised $65 billion in Series H funding at a $965 billion post-money valuation, led by Altimeter Capital, Dragoneer, Greenoaks, and Sequoia Capital, with Capital Group, Coatue, D1 Capital Partners, GIC, ICONIQ, and XN co-leading. The announcement also lists Blackstone, Brookfield, Fidelity, Jane Street, Lightspeed, T. Rowe Price entities, Temasek, and a long roster of other participants, plus Micron, Samsung, and SK hynix as strategic infrastructure partners and roughly $15 billion committed by big cloud providers, including $5 billion from Amazon. [1]

Anthropic said the money would go toward safety and interpretability research, expanding compute capacity, and scaling products and partnerships, and that its run-rate revenue had crossed $47 billion. The prior round, Series G, had closed at a $380 billion valuation on February 12, so the post-money figure more than doubled in about fifteen weeks. [1][4]

Eight weeks after OpenAI set the record

OpenAI closed a $122 billion round on March 31, 2026 at an $852 billion post-money valuation, which was itself the largest private funding round on record at the time. Anthropic's $965 billion valuation surpassed it, and CNBC's report on the Series H made the comparison explicit, describing Anthropic as "now worth more than OpenAI" for the first time. [6][5]

Atlas interpretation: The two rounds are not quite the same shape. OpenAI's $122 billion was mostly new committed capital tied to compute buildout; Anthropic's $65 billion is smaller in absolute terms but includes about $15 billion already pledged by big cloud providers rather than freshly raised, and the valuation is the number both companies and their coverage chose to compete on. Overtaking OpenAI on valuation eight weeks after OpenAI set the prior record says more about how fast investors are re-pricing the two leading labs against each other than it does about either company's fundamentals changing in two months. [1][6]

Opus 4.8, the same day

Anthropic released Claude Opus 4.8 on May 28, the same day as the funding announcement, at unchanged regular pricing of $5 per million input tokens and $25 per million output tokens, with a new fast mode at $10 and $50. The release notes claim gains in agentic reliability and honesty, including a claim that the model is about four times less likely than Opus 4.7 to let flaws in its own code pass without comment, and introduce a research-preview "dynamic workflows" mode for running large numbers of parallel Claude Code subagents. [3]

Atlas interpretation: Pairing a record valuation with a model release on the same calendar day is a choice, not a coincidence of scheduling, and it gives outside observers a concrete artifact to point to when asked what justifies the number. Whether a point release with vendor-reported benchmarks actually supports a $965 billion valuation is a separate question from whether the pairing was effective messaging; the two claims should not be allowed to stand in for each other.
