Anthropic Acquires Bun: Open-Source Terms and Claude Code

Anthropic acquired the Bun JavaScript runtime, promising the same team, public GitHub development and MIT license while tying it to Claude Code infrastructure.

Bun's team joins Anthropic, the license does not change

Bun, the JavaScript and TypeScript runtime created by Jarred Sumner, announced on December 2, 2025 that it had been acquired by Anthropic. Both companies said Bun stays open source under the MIT license, keeps developing in public on GitHub, and keeps the same team. Anthropic said it is betting on Bun as the infrastructure under Claude Code, the Claude Agent SDK, and future AI coding products, and described the relationship as similar to how Chrome funds V8 or Apple funds JavaScriptCore: closely tied to one company's roadmap but still serving a wider set of users. [1][2]

Neither company disclosed a purchase price or other deal terms. Bun's product is a combined runtime, package manager, bundler and test runner, built in Zig on JavaScriptCore rather than V8, with around 7 million monthly downloads and more than 82,000 GitHub stars at the time of the announcement. Sumner noted that Claude Code already used Bun for its native installer before the acquisition, and said the GitHub account with the most merged pull requests in Bun's repository was, by then, a Claude Code bot. [1][3]

A $1 billion coding product buying its own toolchain

Anthropic paired the acquisition announcement with a claim that Claude Code had reached $1 billion in run-rate revenue roughly six months after it became generally available in May 2025, citing adoption at companies including Netflix, Spotify, L'Oreal and Salesforce. Anthropic's chief product officer, Mike Krieger, said Bun's team had "rethought the entire JavaScript toolchain from first principles," and the company said it would keep investing in Bun as the preferred runtime, bundler, package manager and test runner for JavaScript and TypeScript rather than folding it into a closed internal tool. [2]

Atlas interpretation: Bun becoming Anthropic property is easier to read next to that revenue figure than as a standalone move: JavaScript tooling was already essential for Claude Code's installer and, per Sumner, for a meaningful share of Bun's own recent development activity. Owning the runtime a flagship product depends on removes a dependency on an outside maintainer's priorities and funding, independent of whether Bun's own commercial prospects justified an acquisition on their own. [2][3]

Independent coverage: money that wasn't there, and a license that says nothing about intent

Independent trade coverage on December 3, 2025 noted that Bun's company had previously raised $26 million in funding while generating no revenue of its own, making Anthropic effectively its first and only paying outcome. That coverage also flagged that Bun is written in Zig, whose creator maintains a code of conduct with a stated no-LLM, no-AI-assistance policy for contributions, a potential source of friction given Anthropic's business. [3]

Atlas interpretation: The MIT license and "same team, same roadmap" framing describe the deal's terms at close, not a binding constraint on what Anthropic does with Bun afterward. An open license means a fork is always possible if Anthropic's priorities diverge from the wider developer base's, but it does not by itself guarantee Anthropic keeps funding Bun's non-Claude-Code use cases at the same level, and the independent coverage's skepticism was pointed at exactly that gap between announced intent and what acquisitions of small open-source projects by larger companies have delivered in the past.
