One binary instead of four tools

Bun is a JavaScript and TypeScript runtime, package manager, test runner and bundler distributed as a single binary. It runs on JavaScriptCore, the engine that powers Safari, rather than the V8 engine Node.js and Chrome use, and it is built as a drop-in replacement: existing Node.js projects, their node_modules and most popular frameworks are meant to run unchanged. Bun's own benchmarks claim package installs up to 30 times faster than npm and higher HTTP throughput than Node.js. The project is MIT licensed. [2]

Jarred Sumner started the project, initially under a company called Oven, with a first announcement in September 2021 and a 1.0 release in September 2023. Oven raised a $7 million Series A in August 2022 led by Kleiner Perkins, with Y Combinator and investor Guillermo Rauch also participating. [3]

Bought by the company that ships Claude Code

Anthropic acquired Bun on December 2, 2025. Financial terms were not disclosed. Sumner's announcement said Bun had reached 7.2 million monthly downloads and described the deal as letting the team "skip that chapter entirely and focus on building the best JavaScript tooling" rather than build a monetization business around the runtime. Bun stays MIT licensed and open source, and development continues in public on GitHub with the same team, now working full time with Anthropic's backing. [1]

Anthropic's stated rationale was infrastructure, not a bet on JavaScript tooling as a market in itself: the announcement says Anthropic is investing in Bun as the runtime powering Claude Code, the Claude Agent SDK and future AI coding products, and states directly that Claude Code already ships as a Bun executable to millions of users. [1]

What the AI connection actually is

Atlas interpretation: Bun is not an AI product and was not built as one. Its relevance to the timeline is narrower and more concrete: it is the runtime one widely used AI coding agent, Claude Code, is packaged and distributed on, and the reason Anthropic gave for the acquisition was securing that piece of infrastructure rather than acquiring a model, a dataset or an AI research team. Nothing in the public record establishes how much of Claude Code's performance or reliability depends specifically on Bun rather than on the Node.js-compatible layer it could otherwise have run on, and this page does not claim more than what Anthropic itself said.
