A released technical framework
NIST released AI RMF 1.0 on January 26, 2023, alongside a companion Playbook. Its four functions provide a way to organize governance, contextual risk mapping, measurement and risk treatment across an AI system’s life cycle. The launch was a public release of voluntary guidance, rather than enactment of a binding AI regulation. [1][2]
The dated launch record and contemporary coverage place the release on January 26. NIST’s announcement was subsequently updated in February 2025; that update does not change the original occurrence date. [2][3][1]
