IIT Madras inaugurates the Nilekani Centre at AI4Bharat

IIT Madras opened a centre for Indian-language AI research and training within AI4Bharat, building on its existing public language models, tools and datasets.

A new operating research centre

IIT Madras inaugurated the Nilekani Centre at AI4Bharat on July 28, 2022. The official announcement identifies AI4Bharat as an institute initiative and describes the centre's research, training and Indian-language technology work, alongside models and datasets already available for download. [1]

The announcement and same-day reporting agree on the inauguration date. This milestone records the centre and its operating research function, rather than treating its funding as the first appearance of AI4Bharat or dating later IndicTrans2 models to the inauguration. [1][2]
