A university home for Indian-language AI
IIT Madras was formally inaugurated in 1959 and conducts engineering research and education. Through AI4Bharat, an institute initiative, it contributes language datasets, translation and speech models, and training resources. The initiative is an institutional research program, rather than an unrelated company located on campus. [1][2]
The university inaugurated the Nilekani Centre at AI4Bharat on July 28, 2022. The official account describes existing downloadable models and datasets alongside the new centre and its training activity, establishing an operating research resource rather than only a donation announcement. [2]
Later IndicTrans2 models support translation involving all 22 scheduled Indian languages, with direct language-pair and distilled variants added to the earlier English-centric models. This contribution concerns specified language coverage and public artifacts, rather than a claim to solve translation for every language used in India. [3]
