Technology companies establish Partnership on AI

Amazon, Facebook, Google, DeepMind, IBM and Microsoft established a nonprofit forum for AI research and practices. The Partnership on AI was publicly announced in New York on September 28.

A new nonprofit institution

The founding companies announced Partnership on AI on September 28, 2016, to study AI practices, discuss its social effects and improve public understanding. DeepMind’s dated announcement and contemporary reporting establish the public founding milestone. Historical Facebook is represented by its current same-company Atlas name, Meta; DeepMind retains its separate historical organization record. [1][2]

The founding announcement created an organization for continuing cross-company work. It did not enact public law or transfer ownership of the participating companies’ research groups to the nonprofit. [1]
