A speaker that shipped without a launch event
Amazon announced Echo on November 6, 2014, with a short video rather than a press event. The device was a nine-inch cylinder, always listening for its wake word, that played music and answered spoken questions using a voice assistant Amazon called Alexa. It launched at $199, or $99 for Amazon Prime members, and was available only to customers who requested an invitation, a rollout that lasted into 2015. [1]
Amazon built the listening hardware around seven microphones with beam-forming and noise cancellation, meant to pick out a voice from across a room over music or conversation. The processing itself happened in the cloud, not on the device, which let Amazon improve Alexa's answers after the hardware had already shipped. [4]
A speaker with a short list of tricks
At launch Alexa played music from Amazon's own library, Prime Music, TuneIn and iHeartRadio, read news and sports scores from a handful of partners, looked up Wikipedia entries, did unit conversions, and kept alarms and shopping lists through a companion app. It was not a smart home controller. That use case, the one Echo is now best known for, arrived later as Amazon and other manufacturers built connected locks, plugs and thermostats to talk to it. [4]
Atlas interpretation: That gap between the device's eventual reputation and its first-day feature list is the point worth keeping straight. Echo did not enter living rooms as a hub for other hardware. It entered as a speaker with a voice on top, and the hub role got built around it afterward. [4]
Coverage that could not decide what it was for
Early coverage treated Echo as a curiosity rather than a category. CNBC's own headline called it simply "a voice assistant," and reporters focused on the odd premise of a microphone that stayed on all the time in a private room, waiting to be talked to, years before that idea felt ordinary. [1]
