An editor as the agent's workspace

Zed Industries builds the Zed code editor. Its company page describes an editor project concerned with interactive development and collaboration. AI enters that work through the editor itself: the system can use code context, discuss a change and apply edits where the developer is already working. [1][2]

On August 20, 2024, Zed introduced Zed AI in collaboration with Anthropic. The launch offered an assistant panel and inline changes using hosted Claude 3.5 Sonnet, with an initial free period. The collaboration included work around prompt caching; Anthropic was an actual development partner, rather than only a model listed as compatible. [2]

The release had distinct access stages. The assistant and inline features were available at launch, while Fast Edit was still an invitation-only beta. Zed's announcement establishes those product boundaries, without establishing that every feature was generally available or that the hosted model's weights were released with the editor. [2]
