An editor business, then Devin Desktop

Windsurf developed an AI coding editor, following the earlier Codeium brand. Its history includes developer-facing editing and agent workflows, rather than only the acquisition negotiations that later surrounded the company. The Codeium name is a historical alias for this business and is distinct from CodiumAI, the company now called Qodo. [4][1]

Cognition's July 2025 announcement established a signed agreement to acquire the Windsurf product, intellectual property, business and team. That announcement alone did not establish closing. Cognition's July 2026 retrospective supplies later primary evidence that the deal closed and describes the combined products becoming Devin Desktop. [2][1]

The Windsurf front door now leads to the Devin Desktop product. Cognition's policy also distinguishes users formerly enrolled for that product under Exafunction, Inc. from its current service arrangements. The Atlas retains Windsurf as the historical business actor and records Cognition as its owner; a product rename does not require inventing a separate new organization. [1][3]
