An agent that works in the codebase, not the autocomplete bar

Cognition was founded in November 2023 by Scott Wu, Steven Hao and Walden Yan, and Wu serves as CEO. Its product, Devin, is pitched as an autonomous software engineer: rather than suggesting the next line as a developer types, it takes a task, plans the steps, writes and edits code across a real repository, runs and tests it, and reports back, closer to how a human contributor would work a ticket than how a completion tool fills in a function. Cognition has raised over $400 million from investors including Founders Fund, Lux Capital, 8VC and Bain Capital Ventures, on top of the funding described below, and the company says 21 of its first 35 employees had previously founded companies of their own. [1][2]

Atlas interpretation: Cognition's relevance to AI is as one of the more visible entrants in agentic coding: tools meant to complete a task end to end rather than assist a human doing it line by line. Whether that distinction holds up depends on the task and how much supervision it still needs, but it is the category Cognition has staked its positioning on since Devin's introduction, ahead of the broader wave of coding agents that followed from other labs. [1]

Buying a competitor's distribution

On July 14, 2025, Cognition announced it had acquired Windsurf, an agentic coding IDE, taking on its intellectual property, product, brand and team. At the time of the deal Windsurf reported $82 million in annual recurring revenue, more than 350 enterprise customers and enterprise revenue that was doubling quarter over quarter. Windsurf employees received financial participation in the deal with vesting cliffs waived, and Windsurf continued operating on its own during an initial integration period. Wu described the combination as pairing Devin's autonomous-agent adoption with Windsurf's established go-to-market and customer base. [3]

Atlas interpretation: The deal is notable for its timing as much as its terms: Windsurf had reportedly been the subject of separate acquisition talks with a large model lab that fell apart days earlier, and Cognition, itself building a competing agent product, ended up acquiring the IDE rather than treating it purely as a rival. [3]

The valuation followed the usage

Cognition's valuation moved quickly through 2025 and into 2026: a September 2025 round valued the company at roughly $10.2 billion post-money, and by May 27, 2026 it raised $1 billion at a $26 billion post-money valuation, more than double the September figure in eight months. The company reported an annualized revenue run rate of $492 million at the time of the raise, with enterprise usage of Devin growing 50 percent month over month over the preceding six months. [4]
