A university institute across disciplines

Stanford HAI is the university's Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence. It connects technical research with education, policy and study of AI's effects on people, drawing on all seven Stanford schools. It is a Stanford unit, rather than an independent company or a synonym for the computer science department. [1]

The institute formally launched on March 18, 2019, with an inaugural symposium. That launch followed the earlier introduction of a human-centered AI initiative; the symposium date establishes the institute milestone without turning every speaker's institution into a co-founder. [2][3]

Its current leadership page identifies James Landay as director and Fei-Fei Li as founding director. Historical accounts of Li's role at launch therefore need to be read as history, rather than as evidence of her current title. [1]
