A research organization across LG businesses
LG established LG AI Research in December 2020 to develop AI technology and address problems across its businesses. The founding announcement placed it under LG Management Development Institute with participation from multiple affiliates. This is a group research organization, rather than an alternative name for LG Electronics. [1]
Making EXAONE available to researchers
The EXAONE 3.0 release published a 7.8-billion-parameter instruction-tuned model supporting Korean and English. It gave researchers a checkpoint to study and deploy, alongside the organization’s work on AI for industrial and specialist tasks. [3][2]
Research access is a bounded grant
Although the announcement uses the phrase open source, the EXAONE 3.0 license restricts use to research and requires a separate agreement for commercial use. It identifies LG Management Development Institute as licensor. Those terms describe this checkpoint and should not be generalized to every later EXAONE release. [4]
