Open research as an operating model
EleutherAI makes models and the materials needed to study them available outside commercial APIs. Its research includes open model development, model evaluation, interpretability and safety, so its role includes both building systems and making their behavior easier to investigate. [1]
On March 2, 2023, the group announced that it was forming a nonprofit research institute and that more than twenty regular contributors were now researching full-time. That announcement describes an organizational change within an existing research community, rather than the beginning of all EleutherAI activity or an exact legal incorporation date. [2]
The Common Pile is one later example of its dataset work: a joint corpus project assembling openly licensed and public-domain text. Publishing a corpus and explaining its provenance gives researchers a training resource to inspect; it does not establish that every source has identical legal status in every jurisdiction. [3]
