A foundation supporting independent project communities
The Apache Software Foundation provides governance practices, legal stewardship and infrastructure for community-led software projects. Its role in AI is institutional: the data-processing and machine-learning systems under its umbrella need maintainers, release processes and an enduring legal home as well as algorithms. [1]
The foundation announced Apache Spark 1.0 in May 2014. That release combined distributed computation with additions to MLlib, streaming and graph processing. The foundation's participation is explicit in the release announcement, rather than inferred from a research paper's affiliation or from generic use of an Apache-licensed dependency. [2]
Apache Spark has its own contributor community and technical responsibilities. The foundation's stewardship is therefore recorded separately from the project, without turning the relationship into a corporate subsidiary link or treating every project contributor's employer as an automatic participant in every release.
