Gemini places the call and talks to a person
On September 24, Google began rolling out Call for Me, which lets a user ask the Gemini app to phone a business and handle a routine task. Google’s help page lists getting business hours, product availability and service quotes; booking, confirming and managing appointments and reservations; and navigating phone menus and waiting on hold. Google called the feature an early experiment and said it was starting small. [1][2]
Before dialling, Gemini shows a summary of the task, including the number it will call and the details it will share, such as the user’s name and contact information. During the call the user can follow a live transcript or listen with the microphone muted, and can tap to take over, at which point Gemini announces the handoff and leaves. Afterwards Gemini posts a summary of the outcome, and the recording and full transcript sit in the Phone app’s call history. [1]
It says it is an AI, and it cannot pay
The calls go out over the user’s mobile network from the user’s own phone number, in an AI-generated voice. Google’s terms, last modified September 24, require every call to open with a disclosure that the recipient is speaking to a Google AI assistant on a recorded line, and forbid users from disabling or obscuring it. The help page adds that Gemini names the user it is calling for. [4][1]
Gemini cannot call emergency services, make payments or complete financial transactions, relay sensitive information such as Social Security numbers, passwords or health data, or make telemarketing calls. The terms restrict use to personal calls, so a business or government agency cannot use it on someone’s behalf. Calls are capped by a daily limit whose size Google does not state, and people who do not want to receive Gemini calls can opt out. [1][4]
A small US preview on one phone line
The preview requires a Pixel 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro XL or 11 Pro Fold with a US SIM, a user aged 18 or older in the US, a paid Google AI subscription, English as the device language and enrollment in the Phone by Google public beta. It can call only US numbers, and Google says it is reaching eligible users gradually. Android Authority and 9to5Google both reported the rollout the same day. [1][3][2]
Atlas interpretation: The feature returns to the job that Google Duplex demonstrated in 2018 by booking a haircut over the phone, a comparison 9to5Google drew as well. This time the AI disclosure is a condition in the terms of use, and the requests run through the general Gemini app. Neither Google nor the coverage reports how often the calls succeed. [2][4]
