A lab confirmed, with few details
Reuters reported on September 18, 2026, citing two people familiar with the matter, that Anthropic had built a wet lab for physical biology experiments in the San Francisco Bay Area. In an interview that week, Anthropic's head of life sciences, Eric Kauderer-Abrams, confirmed the lab, though not its location, saying the final test in biology is still real lab work and that, as at most biotech companies, some of that work happens in Anthropic's own facilities and some with outside partners. A spokesperson said the lab is not specifically for drug discovery. [1]
TechCrunch reported that Anthropic declined to give specifics on the lab's work but said its main focus was fundamental biology, not drug discovery. TechCrunch noted Anthropic's April purchase of Coefficient Bio and its new program giving vetted researchers access to its most capable models for biology. [2]

One of Reuters' anonymous sources said Anthropic wants Claude to direct robotic units to run experiments with limited human intervention; the company said human oversight remains essential for safety. Kauderer-Abrams described the automation of lab work as being in its very early innings. Anthropic gave no size, staffing, cost or opening date for the lab. [1]
