One conversation for asking and for doing
Since January, Claude Cowork had sat beside ordinary chat as a separate place to hand Claude longer tasks, and in August the two began sharing memory. On September 16, 2026, Anthropic merged them. Anything Cowork could do became available from any conversation, with no mode to choose, and longer tasks keep running in the cloud after the user closes a laptop or leaves the page. Anthropic said the frustrating part for users had been deciding where a task belonged. [1][3]
Claude Docs and Claude Slides launched in beta the same day, and Claude Design became available inside conversations, all on paid plans. [1]
What moved, what stayed, and who got it
The change reached Pro and Max subscribers first, on the web, desktop and mobile, with Team and Free plans to follow and Enterprise administrators promised at least 30 days' notice. Once an account switched, it could not go back to separate chat and Cowork options. Existing Cowork tasks, projects, connectors, skills and files carried over, and the model picker and the Code tab stayed where they were. The separate web search toggle went away, and Dispatch, which starts Cowork tasks from a phone, was closed to new users. [1][3]
Atlas interpretation: Making the agent the default rather than a destination is the notable choice. A user who asks a question and a user who delegates a day of work now type into the same box, and Claude decides how much machinery to use. That simplifies the product, and it moves a judgment users used to make themselves into the software. [1][3]
