ChatGPT Images 2.5 Launch: Faster Generation, New Editing Tools

OpenAI rolled out ChatGPT Images 2.5 across ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and Codex, claiming up to 50% lower latency and adding two API variants plus editing tools.

More from this month: September 2026 AI product and model launches

An editing release more than a drawing release

Images 2.5 arrived less than five months after GPT Image 2. OpenAI describes the point release as better at preserving people and objects from reference photos, following edit instructions across several turns, and retaining details while changing setting, style, or composition. It also claims up to 50 percent lower generation latency than Images 2.0. [2]

Axios tested a logo, a tattoo design, and transformations of a cat photograph before launch. Its reporter found faster generation, more faithful likenesses, and more detailed editing than the predecessor. That is a small hands-on sample, not a controlled quality benchmark. [4]

The central promise is continuity: change one requested part without making the user rebuild the rest of the image. That matters because an impressive first generation is less useful in production than an image whose subjects, layout, and visual identity survive revision. [2][4]

Coordinates, not only words

Sketch lets a user draw a rough composition and submit it as visual guidance. Direct comments attach an instruction to a location on an existing image. Templates turn common jobs such as posters, merchandise, and product photography into structured starting prompts, while prompt sharing lets another person reuse the recipe with different source material. [2][5]

TechRadar's hands-on account found the direct comment workflow useful for localized changes and described a broader edit toolbar for markup, erasing, resizing, and background removal. It also noted that parts of that toolbar appeared to have been rolling out during August, so the model launch and every surrounding interface control should not be treated as one simultaneous release. [5]

One product name, two API models

ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and Codex received Images 2.5 across desktop, mobile, and web. API developers instead choose between GPT-Image-2.5 Flare and GPT-Image-2.5 Sunburst. OpenAI positions Flare as the default for most applications, with higher quality than GPT-Image-2 at 50 percent lower latency, and Sunburst as the slower option for detailed creative and editing work that needs tighter control. [2]

Those are vendor positioning and latency claims, not independent measurements. The split still gives developers a concrete deployment choice: optimize for iteration volume with Flare, or spend more time per generation when precision is worth the wait with Sunburst. [2]

Sharper images, sharper risks

OpenAI's system card says the greater realism can make convincing deepfakes easier without safeguards. For Sunburst, OpenAI documents checks on prompts, input images, combined edit intent, and final outputs; generated images retain C2PA metadata and an invisible watermark. Its automated safety evaluation used deliberately adversarial prompts, not production traffic, and OpenAI says the results apply only to the tested model and safeguard configurations. [3][2]

Early independent image-quality evidence was mixed. In a small hands-on test published two days after launch, TechRadar found convincing fine detail but a persistent grain-like texture in skies, studio backgrounds, and low-light areas. The test identifies a specific failure mode; a small prompt sample cannot establish its frequency across the product. [6]

Images 2.5 is best read as a faster editing system with more ways to specify intent, not as proof that image generation is solved. OpenAI's own evidence is a launch gallery and internal evaluation, while the first hands-on reports are useful but too small to settle general quality. [2][4][6]
