A billion users, and the fastest Google product to get there
Google said on August 11, 2026 that the Gemini app had passed one billion monthly active users, calling it the fastest-growing product in the company's history and the fourteenth Google product to cross a billion. Google reported over 950 million monthly users at its Q2 2026 earnings, so the app added roughly 50 million more monthly users in under a month. [1]
Google's post put usage at 150 million images generated a day and said 63 percent of users interact with the assistant through voice, with parents about 43 percent more likely than other users to use voice for daily tasks. It also reported more than 100 million active users on iOS, roughly 20 percent of Gemini Live sessions using a live camera feed or screen share, and daily active users tripling year over year. [1][2]
TechCrunch reported that CEO Sundar Pichai announced the figure on X, and that Google stated Gemini can now automate actions across more than 40 popular apps on Android, including tasks like booking a ride or a restaurant table. [2]
Arriving two months behind ChatGPT
TechCrunch placed the milestone against OpenAI's own user numbers: ChatGPT had already reported one billion monthly active users around June 2026, roughly two months before Gemini's announcement. Separately,OpenAI's CFO disclosed on July 31, 2026 that a billion active users were using OpenAI's models across its products, a figure the company framed around revenue and margins rather than as a standalone users milestone. [2]
Atlas interpretation: The two billion-user announcements measure different things, OpenAI's spanning its whole product line and Google's naming one app, but together they mark 2026 as the year monthly active users for a leading conversational AI product stopped being a milestone unique to one company and became a number both firms had reason to publish. Google's own comparison point, that Gemini reached a billion faster than any prior Google product, is the more unusual claim here: it says less about AI adoption in the abstract than about how quickly Google could move an assistant across Search, Android, Workspace and a standalone app it already controls.
