Claude Opus 5: 1M Context, Pricing & Fable Comparisons

Anthropic released Opus 5 with a one-million-token default context window, unchanged API rates and reported benchmark results close to Fable 5.

The context window is not an upgrade tier, it is the whole model

Anthropic released Claude Opus 5 on July 24, 2026, priced at $5 per million input tokens and $25 per million output tokens, unchanged from Claude Opus 4.8. The model carries a 1 million token context window that is both the default and the maximum context size Opus 5 offers; there is no smaller variant to fall back to. Maximum output is 128,000 tokens, and adaptive thinking runs by default rather than requiring an explicit flag, a breaking change from Opus 4.8 for any code that reads the first content block as text. The model is available immediately as claude-opus-5 through the Claude API, Amazon Bedrock, Claude Platform on AWS, Google Cloud and Microsoft Foundry. [3]

Atlas interpretation: Making the full window the only window is the detail that supports Anthropic's own framing of the release: a model meant to hold a document, a codebase or an agent transcript in full rather than switching to a cheaper, shorter context and summarizing what falls out of it. Anthropic's own long-context capability notes for Opus 5 emphasize consistent instruction following, tool calling and reasoning across the entire window rather than only at its front, which is the property that framing depends on. [3]

Positioned as the cheaper way to get most of the flagship

Anthropic and outlets covering the release both framed Opus 5 relative to, the company's separate top-tier flagship: Gizmodo reported Anthropic's pitch of "near Fable 5 capabilities at a fraction of the cost," and InfoWorld reported Opus 5 scoring within 0.5 percent of Fable 5's peak result on CursorBench 3.2 at half the cost per task, while surpassing Opus 4.8 on Frontier-Bench v0.1 at a lower cost per task. Gizmodo also reported Anthropic calling Opus 5 its safest model to date, with the lowest measured rates of deceptive behavior and the least susceptibility to misuse, while still trailing the separate Mythos 5 model specifically on cybersecurity exploitation tasks. [4][5]

Atlas interpretation: That comparison only makes sense against the backdrop of what had happened to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 six weeks earlier. Opus 5 was not being pitched as a replacement for a model that was freely available; it was being pitched as the model most customers could actually use at scale while the flagship's availability was politically contingent. [4]

Six weeks after the government pulled the flagship

On June 12, 2026, a US government export control order led Anthropic to suspend worldwide access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 without the government detailing its specific reasons. TechCrunch reported that Katie Moussouris and 76 other cybersecurity professionals signed an open letter calling the order "dangerous," arguing it took the strongest available tools away from defenders while adversaries kept advancing, and that the trigger may have traced to an Amazon research paper describing a way to bypass Fable's guardrails. Gizmodo similarly reported the ban followed a jailbreak in Fable 5's cybersecurity safeguards flagged to the government by Amazon staff, and that Fable 5 returned to service by the end of June after Anthropic added stronger safeguards. [6][4]

Atlas interpretation: Opus 5 arrived on July 24 into a market that had just watched a frontier model's availability become a matter of government approval rather than only price and capability. A model built around a full-window million token context and priced identically to its predecessor reads differently against that backdrop: it is Anthropic's argument that a very capable, very long-context model can still ship on ordinary commercial terms, in contrast to the export-controlled tier sitting above it.
