Cohere and Aleph Alpha Plan to Combine, Backed by Schwarz Group

A plan to join forces, led by Cohere

On April 24, 2026, Cohere and Aleph Alpha announced a plan to join forces as a transatlantic sovereign AI provider for governments and regulated industries, including the public sector, finance, defense, energy, manufacturing, telecommunications and healthcare. The planned combined company was subject to approval by shareholders and the relevant authorities, and it would offer its services on STACKIT, the cloud run by Schwarz Group's companies. [1]

The companies called it a combination. CNBC reported it as Cohere acquiring Aleph Alpha, and TechCrunch wrote that Cohere would lead the new company, calling it not an alliance between equals. Financial terms were not disclosed. TechCrunch cited Handelsblatt as reporting that the term sheet valued the combined company at around $20 billion. [2][3]

Schwarz Group's money and Cohere's reasons

Schwarz Group's companies, already backers of Aleph Alpha, said they intended to lead Cohere's upcoming Series E with a €500 million structured financing commitment, about $600 million. CNBC reported that Cohere had raised $1.6 billion from investors including Nvidia and AMD, and that Aleph Alpha had raised more than $600 million in investment and grants, according to Dealroom. A source told CNBC that the deal gave Cohere access to Europe's largest economy and that Aleph Alpha's contracts with the German public sector were an attraction. TechCrunch noted that Aleph Alpha had pivoted away from building its own frontier models, and quoted Cohere chief executive Aidan Gomez describing its work on small language models, European languages and tokenizers as complementary to Cohere's.
