Apple Chooses Gemini as Foundation for Future AI Models

Apple chose Gemini and Google cloud technology for future Apple Intelligence models, and said features would still run on-device and in Private Cloud Compute.

Apple chose a foundation, not a finished Siri

Apple and Google announced a multi-year collaboration. The next generation of Apple Foundation Models would be based on Gemini models and Google cloud technology, helping to power future Apple Intelligence features including a more personalized Siri later in 2026. The statement did not name a Gemini version, price, exclusivity term or exact release date. [1]

Atlas interpretation: Calling this a license for Gemini to run Siri skips an architectural layer. Apple said its own next-generation models would use Gemini and Google's cloud as a foundation. The parties did not say that the Gemini app or a public Gemini API would answer every Siri request. [1]

The existing privacy boundary stayed in the announcement

When Apple Intelligence was introduced, Apple divided work between models on its devices and larger models in Private Cloud Compute on Apple-silicon servers. The 2026 joint statement said Apple Intelligence would continue to run on devices and Private Cloud Compute while maintaining Apple's privacy standards. [4][1]

Atlas interpretation: That continuity is meaningful but incomplete. It says where Apple intends the product boundary to remain; it does not reveal whether Gemini weights run on an Apple device, how Google cloud technology participates, or what data crosses between the companies. The joint statement is an agreement and privacy claim, not a system diagram. [1][4]

The model supplier changed while Apple kept the product

The joint statement says Apple selected Google's technology after evaluating alternatives and considered it the most capable foundation for its models. It does not say Apple abandoned internal model development. [1]

Atlas interpretation: The strategic split is clear enough without inventing motive. Apple kept the assistant, devices and privacy architecture; Google supplied a model and cloud foundation. That arrangement made model capability a component Apple could source while preserving its control of the user-facing system. [1]
