ETH Zurich, EPFL and CSCS release Apertus language models

The three Swiss institutions released 8B and 70B Apertus model weights with code and training documentation after training on the Alps supercomputer.

Models and development materials become public

ETH Zurich, EPFL and CSCS released Apertus on September 2, 2025, with 8B and 70B language-model weights and associated code and training documentation. The collaboration used the Alps supercomputer, joining model research with the institutions' computing resources. [1]

The dated primary release and same-day reporting establish the launch. The 8B instruction-tuned checkpoint is downloadable under Apache 2.0; that model license does not settle rights in every underlying training item. The release establishes public artifacts, while the authors' capability evaluations remain their own claims. [1][2][3]
