xAI Founding: Elon Musk’s Team, Mission, and Grok Beta

Elon Musk announced xAI four months after its Nevada incorporation, with a mission to understand reality; Grok entered beta four months later.

A quiet filing, then a loud launch

Nevada business records show X.AI Corp was formed on March 9, 2023, four months before anyone outside the filing office knew the name. [3]

Musk made the company public on July 12, 2023, announcing on Twitter that he was forming xAI "to understand reality." The company's own site went up the same day, with a mission statement to understand the true nature of the universe and a note that the team would field questions on a Twitter Space that Friday. [1]

The team and an advisor from AI safety

xAI described its staff as alumni of DeepMind, OpenAI, Google Research, Microsoft Research, Tesla, and the University of Toronto, crediting them with work on AlphaStar, AlphaCode, Minerva, GPT-3.5, and GPT-4. [1]

CBS News put the working group at eleven researchers and reported that Dan Hendrycks, director of the Center for AI Safety, had signed on as an advisor. [2]

Atlas interpretation: The launch material was explicit that xAI would run as a company separate from Tesla and Twitter even though Musk owned all three, which let him recruit AI researchers into a fresh entity rather than a division of an existing one. [1][2]

Why July 12

Musk picked the date because the digits of 7-12-23 add up to 42, the answer to life, the universe, and everything in Douglas Adams's The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. [2]

Atlas interpretation: A March incorporation filed with a state office and a July announcement timed to a number joke served two different audiences: the paperwork went to Nevada, the reveal went to Twitter. [3][2]

What followed

xAI put its first product, Grok, into beta on November 3, 2023, roughly four months after the founding announcement. [4]

Atlas interpretation: The standalone structure Musk described in July did not hold. SpaceX acquired xAI in February 2026, putting Grok inside the same company as Starlink and the rockets less than three years after the launch had described it as a separate venture. [5]
