DALL·E 2: Image Editing, Public Beta, and Waitlist Removal

OpenAI announced DALL·E 2 in April 2022 with sharper images and editing tools, then opened a gradual public beta in July before removing the waitlist in September.

A sharper sequel, gated at first

OpenAI announced DALL-E 2 on April 6, 2022, one year after the original. The company said the new system generated images at four times the resolution of its predecessor, and that human evaluators preferred its output for caption matching 71.7 percent of the time and for photorealism 88.8 percent of the time. [1]

The launch also added editing: users could select part of an existing image and describe a replacement, with the model matching shadows, reflections and texture in the surrounding pixels. OpenAI paired the release with a content policy barring violent, adult and political imagery, filtered training data, and a restriction on photorealistic faces of real people. [1]

Atlas interpretation: Access did not follow the announcement. OpenAI held DALL-E 2 to a small set of pre-selected testers for months, treating the public unveiling and the public product as two separate decisions rather than one event. [1]

The waitlist widens, a million at a time

OpenAI opened a public beta on July 20, 2022, drawing from a waitlist that by then held roughly a million names, and said invitations would go out gradually over the following weeks rather than all at once. New users received 50 free image-generation credits for the first month and 15 a month after that, with a paid option to buy more. [2]

Atlas interpretation: A staged, metered rollout is a deliberate throttle on demand, not a technical limit on how many people a hosted model can serve at once. Rationing invitations by hand made the gap between having access and not having it visible to everyone watching the waitlist, which is what made an invite worth mentioning rather than just using. [2]

The gate comes down

OpenAI removed the waitlist entirely on September 28, 2022, opening signups to anyone. By that point more than 1.5 million people were already using DALL-E 2 to generate images, on the same 50-then-15 monthly credit structure introduced at the start of the beta. [3]

Atlas interpretation: Five months separated a system limited to a handful of testers from one anyone could sign up for immediately, and the scarcity in between was the story the press kept returning to: not what the model could draw, which was already established in April, but who was allowed to ask it.
