Weaviate stores data objects and their vector embeddings and supports semantic and keyword retrieval. Its ecosystem includes the database, managed Cloud deployments and model integrations. Generative search over retrieved knowledge
The February 2023 generative-search module combined Weaviate retrieval with GPT-3 generation. It let an application pass retrieved knowledge into a prompt. That integration established use of an external model, rather than Weaviate developing GPT-3 or OpenAI becoming an owner of the database company. [2]
