Recordings and compositions are separate parts of the business

Universal Music Group operates recorded-music and music-publishing businesses, alongside merchandising and audiovisual activities. Its publishing division, Universal Music Publishing Group, represents compositions. A company group spanning both businesses can negotiate across different rights without making a recording and the underlying song the same work. [1]

The October 2025 Udio agreement combined a compensatory settlement with new recorded-music and publishing licenses. The companies also announced a future subscription platform and changes to the existing service during a transition. Settlement of that litigation did not establish that the later product had already launched. [1]

The announcement supports a documented commercial role in how music-generation services obtain rights and distribute their outputs. It does not mean UMG acquired Udio, that every artist agreed to every use, or that all other AI disputes were resolved. [1]
