A runtime beneath the app builder
StackBlitz builds browser-based development tools. Its terms identify StackBlitz, Inc. and distinguish its StackBlitz, Bolt and WebContainers services. WebContainers runs a Node.js environment inside a browser, supplying a place to execute application code and development tools without first configuring a conventional local environment. [1][2]
The company unveiled Bolt on October 3, 2024 at ViteConf. Bolt brought a coding model into that browser development environment so users could prompt for an application, inspect and edit generated files, run the project and work toward deployment. StackBlitz's later conference recap confirms the unveiling; contemporary sources establish the October 3 occurrence date. [3]
StackBlitz also published a Bolt implementation under MIT. That license applies to the repository's code, rather than automatically making the hosted Bolt service or the WebContainers API freely licensed for every commercial use. The combination of an agent interface and an executable project environment is StackBlitz's concrete contribution to AI-assisted app building. [4][2]
