Models, compute and chips
Preferred Networks develops AI systems across software, computing infrastructure and processors. Its company overview dates its establishment to March 26, 2014. PLaMo is the group’s foundation-model program, designed around Japanese-language capabilities rather than simply a Japanese interface to an outside model service. [1]
Joint development with a separate company
The PLaMo 2 8B release explicitly names both Preferred Networks and Preferred Elements. The companies published pretrained weights under the PLaMo Community License. It permits specified commercial uses while imposing conditions, including separate arrangements for larger businesses. [2]
Keeping the corporate history visible
In May 2025, PFN announced that it would absorb its wholly owned Preferred Elements subsidiary on July 1. The announcement described PFN as the surviving company and said it would inherit PFE’s business and rights. That planned merger should be distinguished from the earlier period when both companies participated in PLaMo development. [3]
