One API instead of dozens
OpenRouter is a unified API that sits between a developer and the model providers underneath it. A request goes to one endpoint, and OpenRouter routes it to whichever provider is serving the requested model, handling billing, uptime and fallback if a provider is down. Its own about page describes it as one of the first LLM marketplaces, dating the company to early 2023, and as of this writing claims more than 500 models from over 80 providers, more than 400 trillion tokens processed monthly and over 10 million users. [1]
Alex Atallah and Louis Vichy founded the company in New York in 2023. The pitch to a developer is that switching models, from GPT to Claude to an open-weight model, becomes a change to a parameter rather than a rewrite of integration code, and the pitch to a model provider is distribution: OpenRouter puts a new model in front of everyone already building against its API. [1][3]
Routing becomes infrastructure
By May 2026, OpenRouter's $113 million Series B valued the company at $1.3 billion, led by CapitalG with the venture arms of Nvidia, Databricks, Snowflake and MongoDB participating. At the time, the company said it was moving 25 trillion tokens a week across more than 400 models and taking roughly 5 percent of the spend passing through it. Investors from both the AI infrastructure side and the data-platform side backing the same round is itself a signal: model routing had stopped looking like a developer convenience and started looking like infrastructure other infrastructure companies wanted a stake in. [4][5]
A payments company buys the toll booth
Three months after that round, Stripe agreed to buy OpenRouter for more than $7 billion, more than five times the valuation OpenRouter had raised at in May. Reporting from Bloomberg, Fortune and TechCrunch converged on the same structure and price; none described the deal as closed as of the announcement, only agreed. [2][6][7]
Atlas interpretation: Stripe's business is sitting in the middle of a transaction and taking a cut, which is close to a description of what OpenRouter already does for API calls to language models instead of payments. Buying the company that owns that position in the AI stack extends a business Stripe already understands into a market it does not yet have a foothold in, rather than acquiring a model, a lab or a research team.
