MongoDB: Document Data, Vector Search and Voyage AI

MongoDB combines document data and vector retrieval. Its 2025 Voyage AI acquisition added embedding and reranking technology, with current automated embedding support.

Application data and retrieval

MongoDB’s company history dates its founding, originally as 10gen, to 2007. Its current Vector Search indexes vectors alongside other application data, combines vector and full-text retrieval and applies filters. This connects retrieval workflows with the document database rather than making the database itself an answer-generating model. [1][3]

From acquisition plans to current integration

MongoDB acquired Voyage AI in February 2025. The announcement kept existing model APIs available while deeper database integration was then planned for later that year. Current documentation separately describes automated embedding generation with Voyage models at indexing and query time. Those are evidence from different stages, rather than a backdated feature launch. [2][3]
