From a prompt to an application

Lovable builds a commercial web app builder. Its company history says the business began in late 2023 and later renamed its gptengineer.app web platform Lovable. The separately distributed open-source gpt-engineer command-line project is part of that history, rather than another name for every component of the hosted service. [1]

On July 23, 2025, Lovable made its Agent the default experience for new users. The agent could inspect a project, change multiple files, use tools and work through errors across several steps. That moved the product beyond a single generated answer toward an agent that modifies a running application. The launch post's claimed reduction in errors is a vendor measurement. [2]

Lovable subsequently introduced Cloud for database, authentication and storage alongside integrated AI features. Its place in the ecosystem is the application layer: it packages code generation, project changes and backend services for people building software from natural-language requests. [3]
