Getting a model the right documents

LlamaIndex builds software for connecting language models to data that an application needs to use. Its framework covers loading documents, organizing them into indexes, retrieving relevant material and passing it to a model. It also includes structured extraction, evaluation and agents that can call tools. That puts its work around a practical constraint of AI applications: a capable model still needs access to the right information. [1]

Retrieval-augmented generation, or RAG, supplies selected source material when a model answers a question. In this workflow, LlamaIndex helps developers connect data sources and storage systems to the answering application. Its documentation covers local models as well as hosted model integrations, so using the framework does not determine which model a developer must choose. [1]

The document is part of the problem

On February 20, 2024, LlamaIndex introduced LlamaCloud and LlamaParse. The original announcement separated a managed ingestion and retrieval service from a proprietary parser for documents containing tables, figures and other embedded structure. LlamaParse entered public preview with usage caps; the wider LlamaCloud service was a private preview for selected enterprise design partners. Those were different access conditions on the same announcement day. [2]

The product addressed a failure that can occur before a model sees a question: flattening a complex PDF into text can lose the relationships an answer depends on. LlamaParse was intended to preserve usable document structure for downstream retrieval. The announcement presents that as the vendor's approach, rather than establishing an accuracy rate across arbitrary documents. Its managed services also sat alongside an open-source framework and existing vector databases, with parsing and ingestion doing a different job from storing the resulting index. [2]

A route into applications

When Mistral released Codestral, its May 29, 2024 announcement explicitly named LlamaIndex and LangChain as community partners with integrations available immediately. LlamaIndex's contribution was to make the model usable within application-building workflows. For developers, that meant a newly released code model could enter a document or agent workflow through a framework they already used. [3]
