The organization around the code
The Linux Foundation is a nonprofit that supports open technology projects and their communities. Its services include business operations, infrastructure, training, events and tools for managing contributors and project activity. These supply an institutional home for collaboration among developers and companies that may otherwise compete. [1]
That role matters when a shared interface needs maintainers, funding and a place for contributors to make decisions over time. The foundation provides support around the work; understanding a project's technical authority still requires reading that project's governance rather than assuming the host makes every engineering decision. [1][2]
An institutional home for AI agents
The foundation launched the Agentic AI Foundation in December 2025, with contributions of MCP, goose and AGENTS.md from Anthropic, Block and OpenAI. It was a concrete move of shared agent infrastructure into a common foundation setting. [3]
The Agentic AI Foundation now describes a scope that also includes Agent2Agent and agentgateway. Protocols, frameworks and repository instruction files serve different parts of the agent stack, so sharing a host does not make them interchangeable technologies. [4]
Hosting and technical governance
AAIF's charter defines a directed fund that raises and spends money to support approved technical projects. Its governing board manages that fund, operating with guidance from the Linux Foundation, while individual project charters set technical governance. A hosted fund is therefore a more precise description of this relationship than a conventional corporate subsidiary. [2]
For readers following AI infrastructure, the distinction identifies which record to inspect: the foundation for shared support, the fund for budgets and membership, and the project for technical decisions. Hosting a protocol also does not by itself demonstrate compatible implementation, adoption or reliability in a particular product. [2][4]
