Training abstractions and a hosted platform
Lightning AI builds software around the PyTorch training workflow. PyTorch Lightning's Trainer handles recurring training infrastructure, while Fabric gives developers lower-level control of their own loops with distributed execution and precision support. The company is distinct from the PyTorch Foundation, which supports the broader framework community. [2][1]
Its hosted platform extends that developer workflow into environments for model development, training and inference. This connects the library work to the operational problem of obtaining and running compute; it does not make Lightning the author of every model a customer trains there. [1]
The January 2026 merger with Voltage Park joined that software layer with GPU infrastructure. Both counterparties describe a completed combination operating under the Lightning AI name. The sources establish that operating identity without specifying a simple surviving-parent structure between the two historical companies. [3][4]
