Light for communication and computation
Lightmatter’s company history dates its founding to 2017. Its work includes optical interconnects and light sources for moving data, alongside photonic processors that perform mathematical operations. Those are related engineering directions with different artifacts and availability evidence. [1]
A processor tested on neural-network workloads
The April 2025 Nature paper reported a photonic processor executing workloads including ResNet, BERT and Atari reinforcement learning. Lightmatter published associated experiment data and analysis materials. The paper establishes a research result, rather than a general-purpose production replacement for electronic accelerators. [2][3]
Interconnect products have their own rollout
Passage M1000 instead concerns optical communication within a chip package. Its March 2025 announcement identified manufacturing partners and a later availability target. That target should not be substituted for a verified shipment date, or confused with the separate processor experiments. [4]
