Reid Hoffman's AI startup, and Pi

Inflection AI was founded in 2022 by LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman, DeepMind co-founder Mustafa Suleyman and former DeepMind researcher Karén Simonyan. It raised roughly $225 million in an early round led by Greylock, before the company had shipped anything. [2][3]

The product was Pi, short for personal intelligence, which launched in May 2023 through messaging apps and a standalone site. Inflection pitched it as a supportive, conversational companion rather than a task-completion tool, a narrower and more personal framing than the assistant-as-search-replacement pitch most competitors were making at the time. [4][5]

A month later, Inflection announced $1.3 billion led by Microsoft and Nvidia, with Hoffman, Bill Gates and Eric Schmidt also participating, bringing its total raised to roughly $1.5 billion. The money funded a 22,000-GPU training cluster built with Nvidia and CoreWeave, and coverage of the round put Inflection's valuation around $4 billion, a figure Inflection itself did not restate in later announcements. [6][7]

The reverse acquihire

On March 19, 2024, Microsoft announced that Mustafa Suleyman would become EVP and CEO of a new Microsoft AI division, reporting to Satya Nadella and overseeing Copilot, Bing and Edge, with Karén Simonyan joining as chief scientist. Microsoft's own post said several other Inflection staff were joining them, without naming a number or a dollar figure. [8]

Reporting attributed to The Information, and picked up by Bloomberg and other outlets, put a separate figure on the deal: Microsoft paying Inflection roughly $650 million, largely to license its technology, while hiring most of its remaining staff. Neither company has put that number in an official statement. The result left Inflection with a handful of people, its technology licensed out, and most of its founding research team on Microsoft's payroll rather than its own. [9][10]

Atlas interpretation: The structure is the point. A straight acquisition of Inflection would have triggered merger review; hiring the people and licensing the technology, while Inflection nominally continued to exist, mostly did not, though UK and German antitrust authorities both later examined it as a de facto concentration. Either way, the practical outcome looked like an acquisition without the paperwork that usually accompanies one. [8][10]

What's left of Inflection

Hoffman recruited Sean White to run what remained. White has described inheriting a company reduced to himself and a chief legal officer, and has spent the period since rebuilding around enterprise AI, positioning Inflection's product around emotional intelligence in business software rather than a consumer chatbot, and making several small acquisitions to build it out. [11]

Inflection AI on the timeline

Inflection AI is one of sixteen original signatories to the Seoul AI Safety Summit's frontier safety commitments, published by the UK and Korean governments in May 2024, alongside OpenAI, Google, Anthropic and Meta. It signed two months after most of its research staff had already moved to Microsoft, which makes the commitment more a formality about the Inflection name than a statement from the team that had actually been building frontier models.
