Image generation for design work
Ideogram develops image models with particular attention to text inside an image and the placement of visual elements. Its contribution is relevant to posters, packaging and other design work where the words and composition matter alongside the picture. The company's June 2026 account describes this as a specialized image-model approach. [1]
The August 21, 2024 Ideogram 2.0 release expanded hosted generation, graphic-design and typography controls. It also introduced an iOS app, search across public generations and a beta API. Free hosted use and paid premium features were access paths to the service, rather than a release of model weights. [2]
Later weights and layout controls
On June 3, 2026, Ideogram announced 4.0 as its first frontier model with downloadable weights under a commercial license. The release described bounding-box layout control and 2K output, letting a developer specify where content should appear instead of relying only on prose instructions. [1]
The same announcement separated available output from its roadmap: transparent cutouts were available, while editable text and movable image layers were described as a follow-up release. Open weights and a planned layer-based workflow are different facts, and neither changes the access terms of the earlier 2.0 launch. [1]
