Protein models that generate as well as describe
EvolutionaryScale introduced ESM3 as a model family working across protein sequence, structure and function. The June 2024 release included a small downloadable model and experiments on a generated fluorescent protein. The much larger model described in the research was a separate artifact from that small checkpoint. [1]
Preserving the original access terms
The initial repository license granted noncommercial use and excluded drug discovery and development. The current small-model card instead identifies MIT terms. These records establish different points in the release’s history; today’s permissive license should not be assigned retroactively to the original launch. [2][3]
A later scientific-team transition
Biohub’s November 2025 announcement said EvolutionaryScale researchers would join its unified scientific organization, with Alex Rives leading science. EvolutionaryScale’s current site directs users to Biohub’s ESM services. Those statements support a team and service transition, without independently proving the legal terms of a whole-company acquisition. [4][5]
