The company behind LM Studio
Element Labs, Inc. is the provider named in LM Studio's desktop-app terms. LM Studio is its product, so this record uses the company as the actor and keeps the product name as a search alias. The software helps people download and run supported models locally and expose them to applications through an API. [1][2]
Version 0.4.0 introduced llmster, a headless core for running the service without a desktop window. The release also added concurrent inference and continuous batching in its llama.cpp engine, alongside a stateful chat API. These changes made a local model installation more useful as a server for other software. [2]
LM Studio incorporates open-source engines, but its desktop application is supplied under proprietary terms. A model's weights have separate licenses again. The application, its execution engines and the models it loads are therefore three distinct things to check when deciding what can be modified, redistributed or hosted. [1]
